Day 122 Last Day of My 69th Year

Today is September 30th. Tomorrow, I'm 70 years old. I feel great. It's 12:30 AM and I am calling my Doctor in the morning for my annual checkup. As I haven't told him about my change of diet, the exercise, the loss of weight and my stopping my meds, it should be an interesting check up.

To celebrate my attaining "advanced age" I had 2 hot dogs at the Writers Guild Theater in Beverly Hills at a political screening of the 1st. Bush/Kerry debate and the movie "Michael Moore Hates America". To show what a disaster it is to eat meat,sodas and cookies, see how my average alkaline caloric intake drops right off the chart.

Day 121 Honey is Alkaline

Diabetics are cautioned to avoid all sugars including honey. I don't believe that. As it turns out, honeys are rated as alkaline producing foods. Alfalfa, clover, etc. are rated at 5.0 whereas sourwood and tupeelo are 5.5. This shoots a hole in my rating of Tahini in prior analysis. Liquified sesame seeds, Tahini, is rated at 4.5. As I mix it with honey, I will change my rating from the incorrect 3.5 to 5.0. I had previously rated tahini down because of the honey when I should have raised it. However, one must buy raw unprocessed honey. Processed honey is rated as 3.0

Day 120 Balance and Neuropathy

As I get more feeling in my feet, my balance is coming back and going up and down stairs is a pleasure. Today I had to fix a ceiling fixture. Before, I wouldn't attempt it because when you balance on a chair and look at the ceiling you need feeling in your feet to balance. Today, I had no problem. Feeling in my legs and feet is coming back and allowed me to balance like I used to. Going up and down stairs has been a pleasure since I got feeling back in my legs and feet and the strength to use them. I no longer have to hold onto the rail. My feet and legs are in much better shape and I can hop up the stairs.

Day 119 3 More Days

In three days I reach a milestone in the history of the male side of my family. None ever saw their 70th. birthday. On October 1, 2004, I reach that lofty height. If I had it to do all over again, I would have started my diet/exercise regimen 50 years ago.

This weekend I took off from the gym. I spent both days walking 3.5 hours doing political canvassing. Unlike the sedentary fella, I wasted my team because I walked too fast. I felt great and I owe it all to diet and exercise. Tomorrow,I will see if two days off, weakens one.

Day 117 First Food Day of the Rest of My Life

The trick of raising one's alkalinity level is clearly to cheat the acidic foods by consuming very few calories thereof. At the same time to reduce or maintain your weight, one must recognize that some of the most alkaline-rich foods are loaded with calories, namely fruit. Therefore if your regimen is to lose pounds, reduce overall consumption so that you will be perpetualoly ready to eat. Never get that full feeling. Unless you are famished, just control yourself. Easy to say, but the strong will succeed in this endeavor.

Day 116 Alkalinity of Caloric Intake

To double check my acid/alkaline balance, I decided to analyze my intake by computing my weighted average. I did that by multiplying total calories times the PH rating of the food I ate yesterday.See chart below. What stunned me was my weighted average was just slightly above the 4.6 Alkaline level. If a person wants to thrive. His alkaline intake has to be greater than 5.5. If he really want to excel, it should equal 6.25. A ratio of 80% alkaline and 20% acidic is not determined by the number of foods one eats by by the alkalinity of one's caloric intake.

Clearly granola, coconut and pumpkin seeds don't help. Yet today, I ate a Snickers ice cream bar and had a slice of ham around string cheese as my compensation upon discovering the truth. Don't punish yourself for last minute picadillos (a 4.61 average), you are facing a lifetime of discipline if you want to succeed. Discard these failings and start programming how much better you feel. how much nicer your attitude towards others will be, how much stronger your efforts will be with a stronger core.

Day 115 Acid-Forming Fruit

Most fruits are alkaline rich. Like melons reach into the high level 7s. However, there are certain fruits that fall below the 4.6 alkaline levels. They are blueberries, cranberries, plums and prunes. The first two are beneficial for bladder and kidney problems and the latter two for bowel problems. These four are the least beneficial fruits and should be avoided if others are available.

Day 114 Improper Break

After a two-day fast, I decided to break it up. I started eating. I stopped the fast improperly by eating regular food instead of food to break a fast with. Next fast I will enumerate how to break it. I spent 4 hours walking a protest of CBS over Rathergate.

Day 113 Fast-Interim 2

Well I jumped back on the horse and it feels great. I went at 3.7 MPH for 30 minutes and jumped my weights from 10 lbs, to 12 lbs. for curls, upper body work, etc. My diversion has been my waist. I'm not hungry nor obsessed. But I continue to feel bloated when I drink water. There must be some effect I'm not getting. I have not waited until I'm thirsty, and that may be the problem. I'm not deinking on purpose.

Day 112 Interim Fast

When you fall down as I did and mentioned Saturday, you have to get right up on the horse and ride it. I fell off my fasting and diet regimen and have to get right back on it and get back on my march towards an optimum weight which should be anywhere from 160 to 175 depending on the amount of muscle I add to my frame.

Day 111 Get Ready

Well I need to fast to reestablish my momentum in losing 20 to 30 more pounds. I have decided to fast tomorrow through Friday. My weight skied to 102 today and my waist to 40. As I have known for years, you can quickly lose your gains when starting to eat again. You have to be careful to continus a reduced consumption regimen.

Day 110 Obsession turns to Panic

For the last few days I have been overeating with the passion that comes with knowing a long fast is imminent. It has been an uncontrolled urge. Exactly I have not controlled it. So I have pulled out my fasting books to reinvigorate my desire to eat less and lose weight. I am going to concentrate on calories and try for a semi-starvation interlude to bridge the gap caused by my panic.

Day 109 Pesticides

Wash all vegetables and fruit thoroughly before eating. Even in cases where the term "organic" is used. Of the 50,000 inedible items in a grocery store, fruits and vegetables are not immune. Many are grown in depleted soil, been fed inorganic fertilizers and absorbed pesticide directly or environmentally. It is always a good practice to wash them before you put them away and again before preparing them for consumption.

Day 108 Clear Eyes

As I suspected, the cloudiness in my eyes was the elimination of poisons. Shortly after I started eating the cloudiness disappeared. Digestion of food stopped the elimination of poisons switching the elimination process to the work of digesting food.I expect to have some cloudiness after I fast all night. I believe my eyes are a depository of substantial poisons.

Day 107 Reduced Consumption

I have to reduce consumption. I can't continue with white chocolate, tahini/honey, tortilla/cheese/salsa, string cheese and grapes, etc. Too many calories. Eat less. Smaller portions. Day 106 A Fast Day

Celebrating I put on 8 pounds and an 1 1/2 inches on my waist. Well, it wasn't worth it. So I looked forward to this fast day to help me charge back down the "scale". A day to rest my digestive system but more importantly a day to reinforce my goal of having a 36" hard belly waist (and dreaming of a 34" waist).

I achieved a modicum of success by not panicking with a blood sugar count of 53 this AM. I didn't take a boost to restore the level, knowing full well that I am not hypoglycemic and don't need it. As I hoped, the after-exercise afternoon reading shot up to 61.

Day 105 Cloudy Eyes

Ever since my 7-day, not-to-perfect fast my eyes have been cloudier than ever. I would like to believe that the cloudiness is just poisons being eliminated. I have noticed in the past that when I broke a fast, the cloudiness would disappear. The elimination would stop. This time I worry that it could be some kind of diabetic deterioration and am going to visit my eye specialist.

Day 104 No Celebrations

One thing to remember is not to celebrate. After reaching 189 pounds, a 40 pound loss. I celebrated with food. Bad idea. I gained 7 pounds immediately. When dieting and fasting, the body like other elements subject to the laws of physics, has a tendency to return to its previous state of equilibrium. Or in our case, a state of "fatness". After today, I plan to be more judicious and limit my caloric intake to quickly shed the extra weight.

I will take the normal morning diabetic meds tonight before bed.

Day 103 Precinct Walking

Today I walked uphill on Reseda Boulevard for 2 1/2 hours and didn't even breathe hard. I wasted a teenager and his Dad. We were solicited lawns for political signs. I went to the gym and did a normal workout and wasn't weaker for the walking. I tried to fit into my slacks and found them too big. I tried to cinch them with my belts but they were all too big and wrapped completely around me. I am going hunting for belts that fit in the AM.

Day 102 Resume Pilates

I have been working on my cardio but forgetting the "core". In my weight routine I have two exercises for abs but now I am down so far, the core is getting more important not only for strength but for shape. I am going to try to allocate an hour a day to pilates and see if i can't shape up the middle.

Day 101 Size 36 Shorts.

I have saved clothes that fit me years ago. This afternoon I looked for some of my old shorts. They were actually in very good shape as I haven't worn them much. They didn't fit. I found a short-shorts and because a 36 often stretches, they fit perfectly. A milestone of immense satisfaction to any dieter. I went to the gym and enjoyed the cut of the old shorts. I have never liked the shorty dresses that basketball players ushered into our culture.

I was amazed today with my endurance and increased vitality and speed. It is a part of the resurgence in my legs and breathing and overall condition. As you can see, I was still celebrating my loss of 40, which has morphed to 37 overnight. Tomorrow, I resume my downward march.

Day 100 40 Pounds Hit

Today I hit the 40 pound loss. I fell to 189 for the first time. I don't plan to have it that low tomorrow because I plan to eat a bunch tonight to celebrate this interim target. My feet are definitely improving. I feel they operate better than they have for years. I feel like I can run. I can balance better in my shower tub-no small feat. For several years I have had to be extremely careful because I have not been able to rely on my feet to signal proper balance. The numbness of my legs continues but I have a strange feeling that my legs internally have improved tremendously and the healing may migrate from the core of my legs to the outer skin. I'm hoping.

Day 99 Reduce Water Intake on Fast

This is the last day of an imperfect 7-day fast. I've lost 39 pounds and 8 inches off my waist. More importantly I no longer have to feel water-logged on a fast. I always followed the advice to drink a lot of water to flush poisons. Ehret instructs that saturating the system reduces the effectiveness of the fasting mechanisms and the potency of cleaning fluids.

Day 98 Eating Less for Belly Good Reason

I was going to continue my 7-day fast but this morning when my 19 year old daughter had cooked the first waffle in her life and offered it to me, I had to succumb. It was delicious. The interesting thing was how I felt the rest of the day. My energy was fantastic, I was super alert, I put out 15 pages on my blog. What hadn't anticipated was my control. I thought breaking the fast last night would trigger my obsession. Strangely enough the programming I'm doing is working. Eat only when your hungry, not when you feel good, not when you still have belly to lose. So after the waffle, the fast continued.

Day 97 A Major Goof Up

This morning I woke up woozy. I felt weak and took my sugar. It was an extremely low 42. I immediately thought of the orange I had yesterday morning to increase my count. That was a big mistake. I have been used to feeling good throughout a fast. Feeling bad has a definite benefit during a fast. It means toxins are about to exit your body. Instead of toughing it out, I had two oranges and a bowl of granola to give me a boost. Worst thing I could have done. Eating does nothing more than stop elimination and switch the body's from its cleaning mechanism to digestion. I should not worry about low sugar counts I am not hypoglycemic. I don't need food when my count falls. I just need rest and let the body cleanse itself.

My blood sugar went up to 105 but my toxins were retained and another fast has to get rid of them. Strangely enough after working out this afternoon my count went down to 66, my weight went down to 190 but my waist balooned to 38. But we had a Labor Day Barbecue and I decided to temporarily break my fast. Big pig out.

Day 96 Maintaining Downtrend.

I have had a tendency to have periods where I gain a pound then lose a pound and take too much time getting to where I want to go. I will be focusing on losing inches and pounds through the rest of this fast. I will increase the intensity of my workouts and increase the time I spend on them. I am starting to get anxious about losing pounds and getting back to a fighting weight. I have been patient but that modality is fading. Today I dropped to 193 and 37.5 which "is" maintaining. My sugar count dropped to 48 and required me to eat an orange. I hadn't slept well last night. The orange raised it to an acceptable 75. After my workout it dropped to 55 but I didn't feel weak so didn't have an orange.

Day 95 194 and 38

I think its working. Its just my third day of the fast, and I am down to 194 pounds and my waist measured 38". My target is 36" and my fantasy is 34". My upper body weighs a bunch more than when I started working out. I probably would weigh 10 pounds less if I hadn't added muscle. I have to start heavy duty breathing exercises to improve my overall condition and skin tone.

Day 94 New Clothes

Well it is the second day of the fast and I have not been hungry or suffered any obsessive food fantasies. I spent extra time walking when watching TV which I believe will help in reducing. My waist reahced 38.5" today and my weight fell to 196. As I said, I am looking forward to losing more weight and eventually stabilizing it so I can buy new clothes.

Day 93 2nd. 7-Day Fast

I am excited to fast for seven days to start my second quarter. My focus is on losing as much of my belly as possible. When faced with those lulls that usually lead to filling my face, I turn my focus to my belly and how nice it will be to lose it. My Doctor will approve as he has spent years trying to get me to reduce if for no other reason than it will help my diabetes. Well I am down 31 pounds and falling. My waist is down to 39 inches. And my workouts are getting more vigorous.
